I closed last week’s service by sharing one of my favorite Bible verses. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” I endure some kidding because I have so many “favorite” verses, but I assure you that this one is definitely in my top 3. The basic meaning of this verse is clear— God has created each of us to do his work— but the key word in the verse translated workmanship is a bit fuzzy. Different Bible translations try to capture the meaning of this word by interpreting as: handiwork, his creation and masterpiece. But the translation I like best because it gets to the heart of this word comes from the “The Voice— a translation of the Bible on CD. It translates the Greek word, poeima— from which we get our word poem— as “heaven’s poetry etched on lives.”
